Pierre Pilote and Abdul Halim of Kedah!

I’m not sure how popular the NHL is in Malaysia, but my guess is these two fellas never much heard of each other. Nonetheless, Blackhawks great Pierre Pilote and Yang di-Pertuan Agong Abdul Halim of Kedah both enter Death Pool lore today, at the ages of 85 and 89, respectively!

Blackhawks captain defenceman (Canadian spelling!) and three-time Norris Trophy winner Pilote led Chicago to the Stanley Cup championship in 1961 (their last until the current dynasty kicked off in 2010), the second season in his run of eight straight All-Star team appearances. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1975 and had his #3 retired by the Hawks in 2008. Bonsoir, Pierre!

Bling!

Fun fact – Malaysia has a constitutional monarchy wherein the monarch is actually elected, one of the rare occurrences of this in the modern world. With that comes the title Yang di-Pertuan Agong, which translates as “He Who Was Made Lord,” and it was that position which Abdul Halim of Kedah (know long-windedly to his friends as Al-Mu’tassimu Billahi Muhibbuddin Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Al-Haj ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah) was elected to twice, in 1970 and again in 2011. His reign as Sultan of Kedah (a region in northwest Malaysia) lasted for 59 years, and was second only to Queen Elizabeth II for longest currently reigning monarch in the world, as of yesterday.

Mike M.’s fourth death with Pilote moves him up to sixth overall while maintaining his Batting Average lead in ’17, while Rob’s third in the last month and fifth overall keeps him in tenth, and jumps him over 100 for the fourth time in the last five years! Good job, guys!

Replacement picks due by next Monday!
