Gord Downie! The Lead Changes Hands!

The Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie played his final encore this week, at the age of 53! Formed in 1984, The Hip would become one of Canada’s foremost rock bands, mentioned in the same breath as the likes of Rush and The Guess Who, despite never achieving great success in the States. Their dozen-plus albums garnered them a boatload of Juno Awards (the Canadian Grammy, essentially), plus membership in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. They appeared as the musical guest on a Season 20 episode of Saturday Night Live, largely as a result of Dan Aykroyd’s influence, he also being a Kingston native, and performed the Grey Cup halftime show in 2004! They are, by most estimates, the best selling Canadian band ever in Canada.

And Downie’s 57 big points provide us with our latest lead change since 2010! Most recent years have the whole thing wrapped up – whether we recognize it at the time or not – in the late summer if not much earlier, but this year’s bunched together standings has the lead swapping hands with only two and a half months to go! I’m stalling as, yes, it’s the commissioner in the lead for the first time this year, but there’s plenty of time left to go! And look how close it all remains!

Replacement pick is due by next Wednesday!
