Lys Assia!
Swiss singer Lys Assia made it to the bridge for the last time this weekend, at the age of 94! Assia’s great claim to fame was winning the inaugural Eurovision Song Contest back in 1956, singing “Refrain” for Switzerland. Look, I realize the Q score on Eurovision here stateside is pretty much zero, but it’s a huge deal across the way, where hundreds of millions of people tune in to this still-running nationalistic singing/songwriting competition. Suck it, American Idol! Some famous past winners of Eurovision include Celine Dion, Lulu, and ABBA (who, yes, won for “Waterloo”). Eurovision’s track record of creating stars is about on par with The Voice, but that has not dampened its popularity. And Lys Assia was the first winner! Way to go!
And Dondos pulls down their fifth death here in the first quarter of the year, giving them some breathing room in third! Nicely done!
Replacement pick due by next Monday!
