Death! Dickie Moore!

Pretty bad month for Our Gang! Dickie Moore, one of the few remaining silent film actors and later member of Hal Roach’s Rascals, planted one on Shirley Temple for the last time this week, at the age of 89! Moore got his start just before the advent of sound, picking up a bunch of credits as a toddler, and had nearly two dozens pictures under his belt before his year with Our Gang in 1932. He would play the title role in the 1933 adaptation of Oliver Twist, and appear in Oscar winners The Story of Louis Pasteur (Best Actor for Paul Muni), as Captain Dreyfus’s son Pierre in The Life of Emile Zola (another Paul Muni epic, winner Best Picture 1937), as Sergeant York‘s younger brother George in the film of the same name (Best Actor for Gary Cooper), as a younger version of Don Ameche’s Henry Van Cleve in Heaven Can Wait (okay, it was only nominated for Best Picture), and as Adolard Bouhouhorts in The Song of Bernadette (Best Actress for Jennifer Jones)! By the age of 32 he was done with Hollywood, instead writing and teaching, popping up periodically on stage. Oh, and he’s also the second actor to kiss Shirley Temple on screen, in 1942’s Miss Annie Rooney. Way to go, Dickie!

And it’s the Bats picking up his fourth of the year, and climbing into third in the Holloway with 85 points! Nicely done!

Replacement pick due by Monday!
